Volunteering Information
NightWalk volunteers are UC students who have been fully trained in how to safely operate the NightWalk service to effectively and efficiently serve their fellow UC community members. NightWalk operates all seven days of the week, primary staffed by individual volunteers and university student organizations.
Individual volunteers sign-up to work through our Online Volunteer Scheduling system.
Organizations should contact us directly to arrange a quarter-long work schedule.
There are three primary positions to be staffed during any given NightWalk shift:
A. Dispatcher – Accept pick-up requests and communicate them with the van.
B. Co-Pilot/Driver's Assistant – Ride alongside the driver and help navigate and communicate.
C. Driver – Drive the van safely and efficiently.
To begin volunteering for NightWalk (as an individual) there are a few steps you need to take:
1. Register Online. You register online to tell us information about yourself so we know who are and how to contact you. When you register you are simply telling us you are INTERESTED in becoming a volunteer. You are not yet ready to volunteer and you are not obligated to continue further from this point, should you choose not to.
2.Get Trained. Training sessions are held as needed. Anyone who has not yet been certified will receive emails informing about upcoming training sessions. These emails will continue to come until you get trained. Training is simple, easy, and is done in a single 60-90 minute session. Upon completing a training session you become CERTIFIED!
3.Schedule your Shifts. Use our website (Online Volunteer Scheduling) to schedule times to volunteer. It’s simple, easy, and fast!
4.Volunteer. We will send you a reminder email the night before you are to work. Be sure to show up on the night(s) you picked!
